Asia Climate Negotiations Workshop 2024

Climate change negotiations are a critical engagement for civil society, particularly for CSOs from the Global South. Interest in the negotiations stems from the fact that these regions will be worst affected by climate change despite being the least responsible for global warming.

Official climate negotiations happen at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP). Their ultimate goal is to stabilize global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at a level that does not cause dangerous human-induced interference with the global climate systems. Of course, the negotiations are usually met with numerous obstacles and setbacks.

CSOs must fully understand the power and resource imbalances in climate negotiations to successfully navigate and engage meaningfully toward a better deal for the global south.

For this reason, ACCC would like to train and capacitate members and explain better the UNFCCC structure, negotiation pillars, and key power blocs that shape the climate negotiations agenda. We also aim to look into the successes of CSO engagements and strategies employed, achievements, and challenges encountered along the way, including the current level of CSO recognition by their governments as effective links to affected communities and partners to reflect better what is happening on the ground in the negotiating table.

This project aims to conduct a “Climate Negotiations 101” capacity-building session to empower ACCC members and networks to participate in the processes under the UNFCCC, specifically the annual climate negotiations and the intersessional. Specifically, this seeks to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Understand the climate negotiations structure, processes, power blocs, and critical agenda;
  2. Learn what CSO climate networks have done in the past, engagements in climate negotiations, and successes;
  3. Discuss the current state of CSO recognition by their government in the various countries where ACCC is present; and
  4. identify effective strategies to forward better our positions and agenda, including critical timelines to consider.

ACNW 2024 will be conducted virtually this coming 1-3 October 2024. You may register either through the link or QR code below:
